![]() ![]() ![]() Magnuson has also been featured in the documentaries "Mondo New York" and "Heavy Petting" (both 1988). She also appeared in "Clear and Present Danger" (also 1994) and Barbet Schroeder's "Before and After" (1996), as the grieving mother of a murdered teenage girl. Onscreen, Magnuson played the older divorcee who seduced River Phoenix in "A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon" and supported Mel Gibson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell in Robert Towne's "Tequila Sunrise (both 1988) and played a six-armed blue-skinned goddess who deflowers Chris Elliott in the flop "Cabin Boy" (1994). Since then, Magnuson has appeared on many TV specials (including, bizarrely, as a judge for the 1995 Miss Universe Pageant) and the ABC-TV movie "The Barefoot Executive" (1995). From 1989 through 1992, she played an incorrigibly chic magazine editor in TV's critically-acclaimed sitcom "Anything But Love" (ABC), starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Richard Lewis. Right" (1987), about a scientist who builds an android boyfriend. She had a larger role in the fantasy "Sleepwalk" (1986), but was still largely unknown to the public-at-large until she starred opposite John Malkovich in Susan Seidelman's comedy "Making Mr. One last thing: my newest DVD reads, "Ann Magnuson (PANIC ROOM)".really? That's what FOX/MGM hopes to remind us of who she is? Well, I guess that'd be less embarrassing than "Ann Magnuson (GLITTER)".Magnuson's first big-screen appearance was a small role in the crime thriller "Vortex" (1982) she went on to play similar parts in "The Hunger" (1983), "Perfect Strangers" (1983) and "Desperately Seeking Susan" (1985). (How could he have never seen it? He's a big Tilda Swinton fan!) It's Malkovich Week at Casa de Ogorek (I wonder if he's seen PLACES IN THE HEART or IN THE LINE OF FIRE). But anyway, I had to have the DVD to show my mate - we watched SYNECDOCHE NEW YORK last week and neither of us were able to make a lick of sense of it, but then the mate revealed he's never seen ADAPTATION, so by the powers of the Philadelphia Library we're watching it this weekend. I dunno, I just felt, and feel, awful for her she's so forlorn and sad it's a bit depressing - I had to turn away. The humiliation she endures during the mall date wasn't funny then, and it's not funny now. That's Laurie Metcalf's desperate single gal looking for love with the wrong man. Where you been, girl? There is one character in MMR that was difficult to watch when I was 13, one that remains an uncomfortable viewing experience today. Why didn't she become a big star? I remember her on the show "Anything But Love" and there again she clearly exuded competent business acumen. Ann Magnuson is terrific too - she's easily believable as a smart PR drone with an effed up love life. Comedy ain't easy, but the Malk is committed and focused, and really brings Ulysses to (pseudo) life. Watch his body language, the way he walks and processes the world around him. I enjoyed it before, but this time I literally ROARED with laughter! I guess I paid more attention to the acting this time 'cause I sure didn't recall John Malkovich being so absolutely heedlessly hilarious playing an automaton trying to pass as human. My main memory was the fabulous production design and costuming, like back then the movie was set in an alternative '80s galaxy with cute convertibles and kitchy-cool high heels. Unbelievable comedy is shaky at times, but Magnuson and Malkovich create some magic. The movie popped up last Saturday afternoon on pay cable so I decided to why not see if it holds up, instead of watching a block of "Scrubs" on Comedy Central again. Right ½ 1986 (PG-13)Under-rated satire about a highpowered marketing and image consultant who falls in love with the android that shes supposed to be promoting. Savvy and beautiful PR executive Frankie Stone (Magnuson) has her work cut out for her. What a nice change: a movie I first saw as a wee lad and remembering liking then, only to revisit it decades later and liking it more (for the opposite reaction, see PLAYING FOR KEEPS). John Malkovich (In the Line of Fire) and Ann Magnuson (Love at Large) star in this fresh, fast and funny film from acclaimed director Susan Seidelman (Desperately Seeking Susan).
